Demolition activities at the former North Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Pugwash will begin Monday, Sept. 16, and will take several months.

The initial focus will be on removing materials inside of the building, including hazardous materials, interior walls, and mechanical elements. This phase will last about eight weeks, after which the exterior demolition will begin.

In mid-December of 2010 Mark took his wife to the emergency department at the QEII’s Halifax Infirmary site. His wife was undergoing chemotherapy, had developed a fever and became septic. Within a few hours, she went into septic shock and multi-organ failure. 

By her side for 60 days, Mark went through the whole experience with her, from emergency admission to a stay in the intensive care unit and rehabilitation.

After chasing cancer for many years, his wife passed away at Christmas of 2016.

Elaine Stanworth works at the Valley Hospice in Kentville, Nova Scotia and says, “It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.”

She’s a registered nurse who provides patient care at the Hospice, which was established through a collaboration between the Valley Hospice Foundation and Nova Scotia Health in 2020. It’s a stand-alone, home-like healthcare facility for people needing care at the end of life, located on the grounds of the Valley Regional Hospital.

Blood collection and specimen sample drop-off services will return to North Queens Medical Centre in Caledonia starting September 18 and Our Community Health Centre in Chester the week of October 21.
