Urgent Treatment Centre will increase access to care in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH, N.S. - A new urgent treatment centre will offer an additional way for people in the area to get care for unexpected, non-life-threatening health concerns.

The urgent treatment centre opened this week at Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

An urgent treatment centre offers timely access to care for those who require treatment but do not have a life-threatening medical emergency. These centres are not the same as emergency departments.

An urgent treatment centre provides care for people with concerns such as simple fractures, sprains, earaches, minor cuts and mild mental health support. The centre is available to people with or without a family doctor or nurse practitioner.

“We are pleased to offer this new option for people to receive the care they need in a timely way by the most appropriate provider,” said Tracey Watkins-Allen, Yarmouth Regional Hospital site lead. “This will allow many patients to avoid the emergency department, unless it is necessary, during times the urgent treatment service is available.”

The Yarmouth urgent treatment centre will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be located on the main floor of Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Please follow internal signage. Patients can book an appointment by calling 902-742-2406.

When making the appointment, patients will be assessed by a nurse to ensure they are going to the best place for care. Patients who are appropriate to be seen will get an appointment either later that day or the next day the centre is open.

"We are committed to fixing healthcare from one end of the province to other, and we are continuing to invest in people, technology and infrastructure right here in our region,” said Minister Colton LeBlanc, MLA for Argyle, on behalf of Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness. “This new urgent treatment centre will provide another convenient option for people to find the care they need, where and when they need it.”

There are currently seven urgent treatment centres in the province. For additional information, please visit Urgent Treatment Centres | Nova Scotia Health (nshealth.ca).
