Family physician Dr. Eliza Moldovan, her husband and two young daughters, arrived in Bridgewater this past February to take over retiring physician Dr. Everett Weagle’s patient roster at the Bridgewater Collaborative Family Practice. They came to Nova Scotia from Kent in England. Now, in their sixth month of living in Nova Scotia, the Moldovan family feels very much at home.

Amanda Stone and Whitney Mabee are the duo behind the innovative First Bites program. Together, they are paving the way for healthier futures, one “baby bite” at a time.  

Stone, a seasoned Occupational Therapist (OT) turned Wellness Navigator, and Mabee, a dedicated Registered Dietitian, joined forces to tackle a critical gap in accessible infant nutrition education across Eastern Zone's communities. The First Bites program is built on the principles of baby-led feeding and responsive feeding.  

Simulation training has reached new areas, including All Saints Springhill Hospital, where Amy McMasters, Clinical Nurse Educator, and Susan MacDonald, Charge Nurse, lead a new approach to staff development.

“The collaboration has been incredible,” shared Amy McMasters. “It’s about bringing our team together for effective learning experiences right here in our facility.”

Over the next several weeks, Nova Scotia Health will be making phone calls to people on the Need a Family Practice registry. Staff will call registrants to confirm whether they still need a primary care provider (family doctor or nurse practitioner) and to ensure they know where to access health care while on the registry. 

Registrants can expect phone calls to show up from either a number they don't recognize or from a blocked caller ID or unknown name/number. 

Working alongside interdisciplinary teams, discharge support nurses (DSN) guide patients and families through the discharge process, ensuring comprehensive support. They identify patient needs and connect them with essential services prior to discharge. From arranging home nursing to providing clear post-op instructions, they foster confidence in patients and families as they prepare to leave the hospital.

With more than 50 years of rural family medicine under his belt, Dr. Chris Elliott, semi-retired since 2019, has recently passed on the mantle of medical site lead at Aberdeen Hospital, a position he held since 2019. This July, he also retired from the Aberdeen Walk-In Clinic.

HALIFAX, N.S. – Effective July 15, 2024, Nova Scotia Health and Life Sciences Nova Scotia have announced an agreement to enhance collaboration between the two organizations. 

Doris Grant, CEO of Life Sciences Nova Scotia, will assume the role of Managing Director of the Nova Scotia Health Innovation Hub. Doris will continue to serve as CEO of Life Sciences Nova Scotia.

For registered nurse Mairead Colligan, the Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) coordinator role is more than a job— fractures signify more than just broken bones but also shattered confidence and independence. “Seeing patients regain their confidence and independence after experiencing a fracture fuels my passion for what I do,” said Colligan.

“Over 80 per cent of fractures in patients over 50 are caused by osteoporosis,” Colligan notes. Addressing underlying issues is crucial to preventing further breaks and enhancing overall bone health.

The Parrsboro Urgent Treatment Centre, located at South Cumberland Community Care Centre (SCCCC) opened in December 2021. As the number of patients and visits per day continues to increase and the services offered onsite continue to expand, the centre underwent necessary renovation to improve the patient and staff experience.

Public Health continues to support access to free, routine vaccines across the province. This summer, clinics will be held at Public Health offices and in community offering free vaccinations recommended for children and youth. 

Early Childhood Immunization Clinics: Central, Eastern and Northern Zones

Public Health offers regular vaccine clinics for children who do not have a primary care provider in Central, Eastern and Northern zones. These vaccines are publicly funded, which means families do not have to pay to immunize their children.
