A newly opened digital x-ray unit at Buchanan Memorial Community Health Centre in Neils Harbour will provide improved care for patients. 

The new unit was installed in June. It produces high quality images that make it easier for healthcare providers to detect and diagnose medical conditions. The unit is also more efficient because digital x-rays can be captured and viewed instantly, saving time for both patients and healthcare providers. 

HALIFAX, NS – Significant changes are coming on Monday Aug. 26 to the QEII Halifax Infirmary that will affect patient and visitor access, hospital parking, and the route to the emergency department entrance. 

Patients and visitors will no longer access the Halifax Infirmary via the Robie Street entrance. The new main entrance will be located at 1796 Summer St., directly across from the Summer Street parkade. 

Maggie Meier suffered a ruptured aneurysm in 2019 that left her with an acquired brain injury affecting her cognitive abilities.

Following her 13-day stay at the Halifax Infirmary, her healthcare team recommended she look into the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Day Program, which provides education and support for people living with brain injuries.

It took her about a year until she felt ready to attend the program, but she is glad she did.

Ellington Hughes has wanted to be a doctor since she was a preschooler. Preparing to enter Dalhousie University’s Medical Sciences program in September, Hughes said Nova Scotia Health’s (NSH) High School Co-op Program provided valuable healthcare experience and confirmation that she’s on the right career path.

“I’ve always said I want to be a doctor. I want to help people. I want to make a difference in the world,” said Hughes. She said this goal has been a driving force in her school studies, and that when things got hard, “I’d remember my goal of becoming a doctor.”

To allow for necessary repairs to the awning above the entrance, the main entrance to the emergency department at Colchester East Hants Health Centre (CEHHC) in Truro will be temporarily relocated.

Starting Friday, August 16, the emergency department entrance will move to the ambulance bay until the repairs are completed. The work is expected to take up to seven days.

An additional option for people to access care for urgent health concerns will soon be available at Queens General Hospital in Liverpool and Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton. 

The Rapid Assessment Zone (RAZ) at Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow is reducing patient wait times and improving emergency department (ED) flow. Stacy MacDonald, the emergency department’s first nurse practitioner, leads this initiative.

MacDonald's expertise and 27 years of emergency and transport nursing experience are pivotal to the success of the RAZ.

Public Health continues to support access to free, routine vaccines in Eastern Zone. This summer, the public health office in Sydney is welcoming youth under 19 to drop in if they missed their Grade 7 vaccines. These include:

• HPV (human papillomavirus)
• Hepatitis B
• Meningococcal disease types A, C, W, and Y
• Tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis) (the “Tdap” vaccine)

Now newly graduated with her Doctor of Nursing from the University of Toronto’s Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing – the first in Canada to defend her thesis in this program – her research and work is focused on removing those barriers for new NPs.

At Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre (CRHCC) in Amherst, the emergency department (ED) team has made significant strides in improving the time it takes to transfer patients from ambulance to the department over the past year. Through site-wide creativity, collaboration, and communication, physicians and staff have enhanced patient flow and patient experience.
