There is a phone service interruption at Strait Richmond Hospital in Cape Breton.  A temporary work around has been put in place so the site is able to receive incoming phone calls through the regular switchboard number 902-625-3100. Laboratory Services

All blood collection services now require booked appointments. The process differs based on location.  Please refer to the blood collection location information below for appointment booking instructions at each location.

Do you need to cancel your appointment?

  • If you booked online, click the link in your confirmation email that reads, “Click here to cancel or reschedule your appointment.”
  • If you did not book online, phone the location your appointment is booked with, to reschedule. Contact numbers are listed in the section below.

In-home Blood Collection

In-home blood collection is available, by referral, for eligible Nova Scotians.

This service is for patients requiring urgent/time-sensitive testing for immediate diagnosis or management of chronic illness who are unable to leave their home due to illness, mobility challenges, isolation due to COVID-19, or risk of undue hardship. 

A patient’s physician or nurse practitioner will initiate the request for this service through the NSH Continuing Care referral process. Referred patients will be contacted by the local blood collection service to book an appointment for the in-home visit.

All other patients requiring urgent blood work can still access NSH outpatient blood collection clinics by booking an appointment with their local blood collection service.

This winterized drive-thru location offers patients the option to be registered and have their blood collected while they sit in their vehicle. There’s no parking, no standing in line and no contact with other people getting tested.

Special instructions for the Drive-Thru:

  • Patient can be driver or passenger.
  • Everyone in the vehicle must wear a mask.
  • Use a vehicle less than 8ft tall (Drive thru has height restrictions).
  • Bring a paper requisition (electronic requisitions should be printed to avoid delays).
  • Bring your Health Card (or other form of insurance and government issued identification).
  • Arrive at your scheduled appt. time.
  • Passengers must have proof of vaccination and identification.
  • Do not select this location if you also need a urine collection. There are no collection facilities on site.
  • Do not bring pets with you. (exception: service animals with registration papers)
  • Do not arrive more than 5 minutes before your appointment time.
  • Do not exit your vehicle while in the Drive-Thru
  • Patients must be 12 years and older.
