The Parrsboro Urgent Treatment Centre, located at South Cumberland Community Care Centre (SCCCC) opened in December 2021. As the number of patients and visits per day continues to increase and the services offered onsite continue to expand, the centre underwent necessary renovation to improve the patient and staff experience.

Amidst the challenges posed by COVID-19, the urgent treatment centre quickly adapted, increasing access to urgent treatment and ambulatory care to alleviate pressure on emergency departments in the Northern Zone. “We’re doing things now that we never did before,” shares Kelsea Gillis, patient care leader at SCCCC.

This includes procedures like blood transfusions and phlebotomy which require the use of spaces for long periods. “We had the community support and nursing resources, we just needed to look at how we can optimize the space to see more patients and minimize wait times.”

The renovation introduces private triage spaces, enhancing both patient confidentiality and comfort. Within these newly designed areas, they established three distinct spaces for specific procedures, effectively streamlining nursing resources and improving overall efficiency all while minimizing disruptions to long-term residents.

Thanks to the generosity of the South Cumberland Community Care Centre Foundation, new chairs and mounted vital signs monitors enhance patient experience and create a more accessible workspace. Nancy Quinn, a Foundation member for nearly a decade, emphasizes the crucial role of community support in realizing this vision. “The dedication of our community has made this transformation possible,” she said.

Gillis, beaming with pride, said, “The way we dreamed it is how it came out.”

As we utilize these revitalized spaces, we celebrate not only functional enhancements but also the South Cumberland Community Care Centre Foundation’s unwavering support in delivering care in Parrsboro.
