Kelly Silver is a nurse educator for the Family Practice Nursing Program at the Nova Scotia Health Learning Institute for Healthcare Providers. She said she’s happiest when she sees others learning and growing and trusting in their own capabilities. 

Beginning Thursday, Nov. 28, Hants Community Hospital in Windsor will offer a virtual urgent care option for people in West Hants who have urgent, non-life-threatening health issues. Virtual Urgent Care is not a replacement for the emergency department but will be particularly helpful during times when the emergency department is temporarily closed. 

For anyone feeling lost in a maze of wellness options, the Community Health Team is one of the best kept secrets in the greater Halifax area. The team has four locations, in Spryfield, the Halifax peninsula, Bedford-Sackville, and Dartmouth, where staff meet people where they are and help them navigate their wellness needs. The Community Health Team is a service of Nova Scotia Health in partnership with IWK Health and offers free in-person group wellness programs and navigation to services.  

Imagine you’re a parent in Pictou County, Nova Scotia and your four-year-old child has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. As the doctor explains the diagnosis, a wave of worry washes over you but soon your focus shifts to supporting your child. You’re ready to do what’s needed to help them stay healthy and safe. You learn that you’ve been referred to the One Door Centre  in New Glasgow for ongoing care and support.

Culturally specific Black health and wellness immunization clinics enable people of African descent to receive vaccinations in a place that feels familiar and respectful.

Appointments are not needed to attend these clinics. Drop-ins are welcome. Although these clinics are culturally specific, all are welcome.

Tuesday, Nov. 26 from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.

The hallways of the transitional care unit at Glace Bay Hospital are filled with murals that depict many of the historic landmarks of Glace Bay. These murals are the creations of Rhonda Sampson, who has been a continuing care assistant (CCA) on the unit for seven years.

Tyler Knickle is a medical radiation technologist at Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro. Patient safety is always top of mind for Knickle, who was recently named one of 49 patient safety champions at Nova Scotia Health.

“Using x-ray technology, we assist physicians and other healthcare providers to get a view and understanding of inside a patient’s body when there is a cause for query or concern,” said Knickle of his role.
