CCA Rhonda Sampson creates mural with historic Glace Bay landmarks for residents on Glace Bay Hospital’s Transitional Care Unit
The hallways of the transitional care unit at Glace Bay Hospital are filled with murals that depict many of the historic landmarks of Glace Bay. These murals are the creations of Rhonda Sampson, who has been a continuing care assistant (CCA) on the unit for seven years.
Rhonda had painted before, but this was her first experience painting murals. She started out painting houses but, “I got bored,” she laughed. “I decided to do old stores that were in the Bay. There were two pop factories – I decided to do one of those, and the old chip wagon, which was around Glace Bay for years, the lobster plant, Tom’s Flowers, Markadonis Shoe Repair, the Savoy Theatre and the Miners’ Forum.” The murals also feature the fire station, a telephone booth and an outhouse, among others.
When asked how the murals have been received, Rhonda said, “Residents and their families love it. A lot of people from Glace Bay remember all of it. People often tell you stories about the Miners’ Forum when they were kids.”
While the painting process was enjoyable for Rhonda, she said, “The best reward was connecting with the people of our community and hearing their stories growing up in the Bay. All the input from them and my coworkers made it extra special.”
Manager Terri Billard spoke to Rhonda’s impact. “Rhonda is a beautiful human and has the biggest heart; she loves the residents and goes above and beyond to make everything special for them.”
Thank you, Rhonda, for lending your talents to make the unit more welcoming and homier for residents, visitors and staff!
