For nearly two decades, Nurse Practitioner (NP) Kristal MacLean has been at the forefront of primary care in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. 

Starting in the halls of the Aberdeen School of Nursing, MacLean’s dedication to healthcare grew into a deep commitment to primary care. Today, she serves as the primary provider for more than 800 patients at the Westside Health Centre in New Glasgow. 

In celebration of Medical Radiation Technologists (MRT) Week, Nova Scotia Health has been highlighting some of the amazing MRTs working across the province. Today, we feature Kara Doucet, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist in the MRI Department at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. 

Originally from Halifax, Doucet knew she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare from an early age. She obtained her Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from Dalhousie University specializing in Nuclear Medicine Technology and MRI during her final year of study. 

Dr. Yasmin Sadri and Dr. Nima Fomani are making significant strides in the medical community, bringing their unique backgrounds and shared passions to the forefront of healthcare. Both originally from Iran, their journey has been one of dedication, a commitment to patient care, and love.

In 2004, the EKM Health Foundation and the Rotary Club of Wolfville both agreed it was important to reinvest in the community by providing grants to some of its most vulnerable citizens – those attempting to deal with the pain, anxiety and expense associated with cancer. 

The Hand-to-Hand to Help fund is separate from the Foundation’s regular grants program and is designed to complement existing health care processes by providing relief where it is most needed. 

November 3 to 9 marks Medical Radiation Technologists’ Week.

In celebration of Medical Radiation Technologists (MRT) Week, Nova Scotia Health is highlighting some of the amazing MRTs working across the province. Today, we feature Kameron Power, a radiation therapy student sponsored by Nova Scotia Health through the Radiation Therapist Tuition Sponsorship program.

Paving work is scheduled to begin at Guysborough Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 7. It is expected to be completed by Nov. 12

Most of the paving work will occur in the main public parking lot in front of the hospital. While work is underway, patients, visitors, physicians and staff for both the hospital and Milford Haven Nursing Home will need to park in the side and back parking lots at the hospital.

Access to the hospital's main entrance and its ambulance bay will not be affected by the work. 

With The Heart of Health series, we’re shining a light on the many dedicated employees, physicians, learners and volunteers who make Nova Scotia Health such a remarkable place to work and receive care. Today we’re featuring Carla Williams a family practice nurse who has been working at Eastside Collaborative Practice in New Glasgow for 12 years. In that role, she cares for patients from birth to death. She also holds a specialty role at the clinic in ostomy/incontinence care.

Sophie Curtis came to Glace Bay Hospital’s unit 3-South/West as a student nurse, stayed on as a graduate nurse and will continue her work on the unit now that she’s graduated as an RN from Cape Breton University. She feels part of the team – and has since the beginning. 

“When I first came here, I felt like everyone wanted to teach me everything,” said Sophie. “It wasn’t only my preceptor Shellyse; other nurses would say, ‘I’m going to do this, do you want to come watch?’ I was very welcomed here.” 

As of Nov. 4, 2024, there are 132,166 Nova Scotians on the Need a Family Practice Registry.

The last published number was Oct 4, 2024 when there were 145,114 Nova Scotians on the registry. 

In total, 8,121 people were attached in October 2024. A further 4,827 people were removed as a result of ongoing validation work that confirmed they have a provider.

Nova Scotia Health will next update the registry in early December.
