South Cumberland Community Care Centre (SCCCC) in Parrsboro is buzzing with excitement as it welcomes its first-ever group of Practical Nursing students from Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). This milestone marks a new chapter in the centre's commitment to rural healthcare education and workforce development.

Taking over a family practice can be a challenging task for physicians. It comes with a large number of patients who have varying needs, and some with complex medical histories that go back decades. It takes time to learn patient history and get your bearings in a new role. 

Dr. Sarah Conrad, a family physician in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, is making an impact on her community and the next generation of doctors. She was recently recognized as one of four recipients of the Undergraduate Preceptor of the Year Award for 2023-24 from the Department of Family Medicine at Dalhousie University. The other honorees include Dr. Daniel Bayard, Dr. Raiche-Marsden, and Dr. Susan MacLeod.

When nearly record-breaking snowfalls disrupted travel and healthcare operations in Cape Breton last winter, a new Nova Scotia Health team was able to quickly notify surgical and endoscopy patients their procedures were postponed and give them a new appointment for their peace of mind.

Culturally specific Black Health and Wellness Immunization Clinics enable people of African descent to receive vaccinations in a place that feels familiar and respectful. Appointments are not needed to attend Black Health and Wellness Immunization Clinics, drop-ins are welcome. Although these clinics are culturally specific, all are welcome to attend.

As of November 27th, there are 119, 670 Nova Scotians on the Need a Family Practice Registry. 

The last published number was Nov 4, 2024, when there were132,166 Nova Scotians on the registry.

In total 10,477 people were attached in November 2024. A further 2,019 people were removed as a result of ongoing validation work that confirmed they have a provider. The percentage of the population on the registry is 11.3%.

Nova Scotia Health will next update the registry in early January.

Nova Scotia Health is requesting the public's assistance in locating 31-year-old Ryan Joseph Trentleman, who is missing from a Dartmouth hospital.

Ryan has hazel eyes and brown hair. He stands 6’1” and weighs 198 lbs. He was last seen wearing a black sweater, grey jeans, red hat, and red sneakers. 

The patient’s risk to himself and others increases with the length of time he is away from treatment.

Anyone with information is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.
