Medical Radiation Technologists Week Spotlight: Kara Doucet loving her job and team at the QEII in Halifax
In celebration of Medical Radiation Technologists (MRT) Week, Nova Scotia Health has been highlighting some of the amazing MRTs working across the province. Today, we feature Kara Doucet, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist in the MRI Department at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.
Originally from Halifax, Doucet knew she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare from an early age. She obtained her Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from Dalhousie University specializing in Nuclear Medicine Technology and MRI during her final year of study.
“I wanted to get my education in a specialized field with the hopes of getting a job I loved soon after graduation,” she said.
Upon graduating and completing her registration exam with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), Doucet was hired immediately by the QEII and has happily remained in her position for the past six years.
When asked about why she chose to pursue MRI specifically, Doucet said “I had an interest in new and emerging technologies so diagnostic imaging felt like a great fit for me.”
Although she has many enjoyable aspects within her position, Doucet’s favourite is being able to help patients with claustrophobia who need diagnostic imaging.
“MRI can be a challenging test for many people due to the nature of the exam. The small space and loud noises can be overwhelming for many patients. It’s so rewarding to me when I can work with a patient to help them overcome their anxiety and get the healthcare they need.”
Another wonderful aspect of her career working at the QEII is her amazing team of colleagues. “My coworkers are made up of such a diverse and intelligent group of professionals who care about our patients and have a passion for medical imaging technology,” she said.
Outside of work, Doucet is a mother to two young boys. She enjoys doing yoga, reading and hiking as hobbies, as well as spending quality time with her family.
Thank you, Kara Doucet, for your expertise, dedication and hard work helping patients within Nova Scotia. You are appreciated for all that you do!
