HALIFAX, N.S. - A new phase has been reached in Nova Scotia’s ongoing commitment to transforming cancer care.

Cancer care patients in Nova Scotia will start receiving care on the first-in-the-world Ethos radiotherapy system with HyperSight imaging solution in January 2024. Powered by artificial intelligence, Ethos allows care teams to target tumour sites while protecting surrounding organs from potential damage.

In 2008, clinical pharmacist, Dr. Emily Johnston, was a new graduate from Dalhousie University heading into her first role with a community pharmacy in Calgary at the height of the opioid crisis. During this time, she would see use of prescribed and non-prescribed opioids that would shape and inform her scope of research going forward.

Recently the team on 8A at the QEII Health Sciences Centre hosted their second Daisy Award Celebration. Taylor Gaudette RN was awarded with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. She was presented the award with the patient who nominated her, her family, her peers, and a representative from cancer care program all in attendance.

A native of Sydney, Pam Lappin obtained her Bachelor of Arts at the University College of Cape Breton, then moved to Halifax where she worked as a youth worker while studying for her Bachelor of Social Work at Dalhousie.  She decided to return to her studies at age 40 and was admitted to the Master of Social Work program at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.

It was over one year ago that Hurricane Fiona tore through the Maritimes, causing devastating damage to communities throughout Nova Scotia. Cape Breton was hit particularly hard, with roofs blown off buildings, downed power lines, trees uprooted, and homes flooded.

In the aftermath of the hurricane, primary care clinics and pharmacies were closed due to power outages, and the emergency departments soon became overwhelmed.

Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre’s new transitional care unit (TCU) cares for people who are waiting to return to community but do not require acute care in a hospital. The unit offers a care environment that supports a smooth and safe transition to another care setting, such as a nursing home or a place for patients to regain strength to return home after a hospital stay. The care focuses on reaching wellness goals and promotes activity and independence.

November 12 to 18 marks Perioperative Nurses Week which honours and recognizes the dedication and impact of perioperative nurses. The theme of this year’s week is: “Standing for Patient Safety and Excellence in Surgical Practice,” something we count on our exceptional colleagues to promote and support each day for our patients.

In all aspects of the surgical journey, from pre-operative assessment to recovery, perioperative nurses have an integral role in providing care for their patients and supporting surgical teams in and out of the operating room.
