Volunteer Marion Allen makes difference in cancer care
Marion Allen brings energy and heart to her role as a cancer care special projects volunteer at the Victoria General site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.
Marion stands out as a driving force within Nova Scotia Health’s volunteer team. She jumped into volunteering soon after moving to the city from a rural community. She spotted a newspaper advertisement seeking volunteers, which sparked her interest.
She began volunteering in recreation programs at the Veterans Memorial Building and later helped at the flu shot clinics at both the Victoria General and Halifax Infirmary sites of the QEII. Currently, she works closely with the cancer care volunteer coordinator. Marion writes thank you notes, assembling patient education materials and assisting with initiatives related to the Sunshine Room. Marion also helps with special projects whenever requests arise and is always willing to assist wherever help is needed.
Marion’s motivation is rooted in a simple but powerful drive: “That I can help and help is needed to do these things.” This sense of purpose keeps Marion engaged, knowing that her contributions make a meaningful difference to patients and staff alike.
Looking back, Marion is proud of several accomplishments: “I remember one time compiling over 200 cancer care packages during one shift to be given to inpatients and outpatients. I also volunteered during COVID-19 and did up over 1,000 testing kits in one shift.” These milestones reflect her dedication and the impact she has had during critical moments in healthcare.
For Marion, the experience has been deeply rewarding. “Volunteers are always needed,” she says. “There is a great amount of volunteer programs available in Halifax at different hospitals.” Her words remind us volunteering is vital to a community’s health and well-being.
Whether assembling care packages, supporting clinics or assisting with special projects, Marion’s dedication and compassion shine through. Her story is a testament to the power of volunteering and the ongoing need for committed individuals willing to lend a hand.
