A recent collaboration between Nova Scotia Health’s bariatric teams in Truro and Glace Bay is paving the way for stronger, more connected obesity care across the province.
Dr. Ahmed Jad, alongside registered dietitians Ashley Manuel and Meredith Lap from the Truro-based team, visited the Obesity Care Clinic in Glace Bay to share knowledge and learn from their Eastern Zone colleagues. The visit included educational sessions, discussions on best practices and a deep dive into both surgical and non-surgical obesity management approaches.
“This collaboration has been invaluable, as it not only fostered mutual learning but also laid the groundwork for ongoing efforts to enhance access, improve quality and support each other in providing comprehensive obesity care,” said Dr. Jad. “The experience was enriching for both teams, and we are excited about the possibilities for future joint efforts.”
For the team in Cape Breton, the visit was equally inspiring. “Wow is all I can say! What an amazing day!” said Lisa MacDonald, manager of rehabilitation services, which includes the Obesity Care Clinic. “Dr. Jad and his team shared information about their new bariatric surgery service, and we had the chance to showcase our conservative, non-surgical approach. We’re looking forward to working together to grow obesity care management in Nova Scotia Health in a collaborative way.”
The visit also included a presentation by the Truro team to primary care providers in Cape Breton, sharing insights into their bariatric surgery program and learning more about how the Obesity Care Clinic operates. “It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange knowledge and collaborate,” said Ashley Manuel. “We gained valuable insights into each other’s programs, strengthening our collective approach to obesity care in Nova Scotia.”
By working together, teams across zones are improving obesity care and expanding access to services for patients across Nova Scotia.
