Renaming contest for Haliburton Place in Windsor

WINDSOR, N.S. – Nova Scotia Health is seeking community input to help rename Haliburton Place, a 32-bed long-term care facility located in Hants Community Hospital.

The health authority is renaming the home to better reflect the community it serves and to move away from the use of the Haliburton name because of its association with the racist and misogynistic views and values espoused in Thomas Chandler Haliburton’s writings.

Starting on May 13, community members are invited to submit names either through paper entries or online (www.changethename.ca). Entries will be reviewed by a panel of community members. The panel will then select three names to be passed along to Nova Scotia Heath’s executive team to choose and approve the winner.

The winner will receive a $100 voucher to the Avon Community Farmers’ Market. Contest deadline is May 31.

Submissions should:

·        Reflect the purpose of the building

·        Recognize its significance in the community

·        Be culturally appropriate and respectful

·        Be compatible with NS Health’s vision, mission, and values

·        Be unique

While Nova Scotia Health’s policy does allow facilities to be named after a person, this is done only in very special situations where the person being honoured has made an exceptional contribution to healthcare services locally or nationally, or has a deep connection to the facility.

Paper entries will be available at the following locations:

·        West Hants Middle School

·        West Hants Education Centre

·        Three Mile Plains Baptist Church

·        Haliburton Place

·        Hants Community Hospital emergency department waiting room
