New name for St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish
St. Martha’s Regional Hospital is getting a new name.
Effective Oct. 1, 2026, the hospital’s name will change to Antigonish Memorial Regional Hospital.
The name change will follow the conclusion on Sept. 30 of the Mission Assurance Agreement between the Sisters of St. Martha, the Department of Health and Wellness and Nova Scotia Health.
The new name was developed from suggestions shared during internal engagement sessions and activities held in June with hospital staff, physicians, volunteers and learners. It reflects many things that were identified as being important in the sessions/activities:
- Antigonish reflects the geographic location of the hospital.
- Memorial recognizes the site’s history and the Sisters’ 120 years of dedication, care and service.
- Regional Hospital reflects the level of care and services provided at the site.
The name also aligns with Nova Scotia Health’s Facility Naming policy.
Work is underway to update priority signage, Nova Scotia Health’s website and other materials to reflect the new name by Oct. 1, wherever possible. Some updates may continue after that date as part of the broader transition.
Transition planning will also include recognition activities and the development of a permanent reflection space at the hospital.
