New Dialysis Unit Now Open in Pictou County
PICTOU, NS — Patients requiring life-saving dialysis treatments in Pictou County can now receive care closer to home with the opening of the expanded renal dialysis unit at Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital (SHMH) in Pictou.
The $3.58-million investment by the provincial government expanded the unit from four to 12 dialysis stations, increasing capacity to treat up to 48 patients. The new space provides a more comfortable and efficient environment for patients and staff, with modern equipment, a dedicated entrance, and updated electrical, water and ventilation systems.
“There has been a very positive response from patients since we opened the doors in August,” said registered nurse Christa Maxwell. “It really makes a difference for them to have this here in the community. Before we opened, the nearest dialysis was in Truro or Antigonish, so there’s a huge emotional and financial benefit.”
“There’s a big relief in time for sure,” added licensed practical nurse Anna Gillis. “Patients don’t have to travel that distance anymore. Right now, we’re seeing between 16-19 patients a day with capacity to see 24 patients a day. We have no patients on the waitlist and can accept new patients as needed. It’s wonderful.”
For patients like Leonard Lowe of Hopewell, the new unit is a game-changer. “I used to travel three times a week to Truro for treatment,” said Lowe. “Now, I can get home sooner after my treatments and spend more time with my family. It’s made my life so much easier.”
The expansion project was funded under the 2023-24 capital plan, with support from the Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Foundation and Aberdeen Health Foundation.
“The Foundation is proud to have been part of a project making essential healthcare more convenient and accessible for the people it serves,” said Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Board chair Kora Hanrahan. “Supporting the creation of the renal dialysis unit has been very fulfilling for our members as we know the impact it will have on people’s lives.”
“Expanding access to dialysis treatment in Pictou County will be lifechanging for patients, especially for those who had to travel outside their communities to receive this lifesaving care,” said Minister of Energy and Pictou West MLA Marco MacLeod, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson. “Patients no longer must travel hours for care, the waitlist has been eliminated, and there is now room to take on new patients as needed. This is great news for renal dialysis patients and their families living throughout Pictou County.”
Construction began in June 2024 and was completed by summer 2025. The new unit is now open and fully operational, offering patients a welcoming, modern space that provides care closer to home and strengthens the hospital’s role in the community.
