Volunteers are an integral part of Nova Scotia Health, contributing significantly to the care provided to patients and residents.

The volunteer team reflects a wide range of backgrounds, including various cultures, ages, abilities and life experiences. Some volunteers are exploring future careers in healthcare, while others offer valuable perspectives shaped by years of experience. No matter their background, all are united by a shared dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Nova Scotia Health aims to ensure a volunteer’s journey is both meaningful and enjoyable. With a variety of roles and opportunities for learning, the goal is to create an environment where volunteers feel appreciated and motivated. Across the province, many hardworking volunteers help strengthen patient care. Liz Connolly is one of them.

Liz volunteers at the Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre in Halifax, where she welcomes visitors and guides them to their appointments with a friendly smile. She says she was drawn to volunteering because she enjoys greeting people and helping them feel comfortable as soon as they arrive. “I greet visitors, guide them to the right areas for their appointments and make sure they know where they need to go,” she says.

Her role goes beyond giving directions. Liz engages in friendly, supportive conversations with patients and visitors, helping create a warm, positive environment in the centre.

Liz’s motivation comes from a desire to make a meaningful difference in her community. She says volunteering gives her a sense of purpose and fulfillment, allowing her to assist others, offer kindness and help the outpatient center run smoothly.

“Volunteering allows me to connect with people, support the staff and contribute to a place where care and compassion are essential,” she says.
