With the Heart of Health series, we’re shining a light on the many dedicated employees, physicians, learners, and volunteers who make Nova Scotia Health such a remarkable place to work and receive care. Today, we’re featuring Gladys Bower, who volunteers at the information desk at Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

Anyone walking through the front doors of Yarmouth Regional Hospital has likely been greeted by the warm voice and steady presence of Gladys Bower, a seasoned volunteer at the Vancouver Street site.

At the suggestion of friends who urged her to give volunteering at the hospital a try, Gladys began giving of her time the same year she retired from a nearly 40-year career working in the public sector. The 87-year-old went to “work” in the hospital gift shop and, more than 30 years later, continues donating her time to Yarmouth Regional Hospital.

“I just like meeting people,” Gladys explains. “I like to get out and socialize.”

Currently, her domain is the information desk. She answers questions, offers directions and helps visitors navigate what can be sometimes stressful moments. Her days are never dull, she says.

“You never know what you’re going to get asked,” Gladys says. “Nine times out of 10, it’s nothing to do with us but people come to the desk because they don’t know where else to go.”

Gladys says she has never considered her efforts extraordinary, even though many visitors return to thank her.

Her connection to the hospital runs deeper than her volunteer work. Her brother spent more than 30 years working in the hospital lab and many of her friends have volunteered or worked in the building over the years. Still, she says her motivation has always been simple.

“I just wanted to meet people and do something useful after I retired,” she says.

Even after a recent knee replacement, Gladys says she has no plans to slow down.

“I’m walking a little slower than I used to but I’m never going to give up,” she notes, with a chuckle. “As long as I can get up and walk, I’m OK.”

Her dedication has not gone unnoticed. Someone — she still doesn’t know who — nominated her for this Heart of Healthcare profile, a recognition she says she never sought.

“I don’t like being interviewed or anything like that.” Gladys says with a laugh, noting the irony.

Still, she hopes her story might encourage others to consider volunteering.

“They’re always looking for volunteers,” Gladys points out. “If people want to meet others and get out of the house, the hospital is a good place to start.”

After three decades, Gladys says the rewards remain the same.

“When you’re able to help people, and they come back and say thank you - that’s what brings me joy.”
