Dr. Nicole Boutilier, Executive Vice President, Medicine and Clinical Operations, was honoured on May 15 by the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders (CSPL) with the 2026 Chris Carruthers Excellence in Medical Leadership Award.

Dr. Boutilier’s system-level impact on Nova Scotia’s healthcare system was recognized, including measurable improvements in healthcare delivery; enhanced physician recruitment and retention; expanded access to care in rural and underserved areas; and a coordinated, data-informed approach to clinical operations. This impact also extends to the advancement of training pathways and community-based care models, which are improving the quality, safety and consistency of care across the province.

Dr. Boutilier’s championship for physician engagement and well-being were also celebrated, as was her commitment to fostering a culture of trust, psychological safety and shared accountability.

“She…[ensures] physicians are true partners in service delivery, policy development and system transformation,” said co-nominator Dr. Minoli Amit, a recently retired pediatrician from the Antigonish area.

“She fosters a culture of collaboration, inclusion and shared purpose, where individuals and teams are empowered to achieve their best,” said co-nominator Dr. Cheryl Pugh, Western Zone Medical Executive Director.

Constance LeBlanc, Incoming President of the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders (CSPL) and Professor and Director of Education, Department of Emergency Medicine, Dalhousie University, is equally excited and proud to celebrate Dr. Boutilier’s achievements.

“[This] distinction reflects her exceptional leadership, commitment and impact within the physician leadership community. This honour speaks not only to her individual achievements but also to the strength of leadership emerging from Nova Scotia,” said Constance.

“Nicole is a patient-first physician and leader. A trusted advisor, mentor and colleague to many, her leadership has been critical to the transformation of our health system in Nova Scotia,” said Karen Oldfield, interim President and CEO, Nova Scotia Health.

Congratulations and thank you for all that you do, Dr. Boutilier!
