In October 2024, the Spryfield community welcomed two pediatricians, Dr. Rockey Chen and Dr. Michael Treece. With their diverse backgrounds and shared commitment to improving children's health, these two doctors bring their expertise to the newly opened Spryfield Children’s Health Clinic.
In a collaborative effort between Nova Scotia Health Primary Health Care and IWK Community Pediatrics, this is the first clinic using a new “hybrid model” that delivers a combination of primary care and consultant care to pediatric patients.
The Spryfield Children’s Health Clinic provides primary care to infants, children and adolescent patients who previously lacked a primary care provider. The clinic offers urgent appointments on short notice, allowing pediatric patients accepted into the practice to access timely healthcare for common childhood illnesses. The goal is to reduce emergency department visits for patients with health issues that can be assessed and treated in a clinic setting.
"It's such a fulfilling experience to see the positive changes that come with working in pediatrics," says Dr. Treece. "Children are resilient and adaptable, and there’s so much hope when you're able to help guide them through their early years. The changes in children’s development fascinate me every day, and I look forward to continuing this work in Spryfield."
Dr. Treece comes to Spryfield with a background working in underserved areas, having previously practiced in both San Francisco and Hawaii. With strong ties to the East Coast - his wife’s family is from Cape Breton - the decision to move to Nova Scotia felt natural and their transition has been smooth, thanks in no small part to the welcoming culture of the people here.
"The community in Spryfield has been so warm and inviting," says Dr. Treece. "I'm grateful to be able to work here, and I’m excited to serve the families in this wonderful neighborhood."
Dr. Rockey Chen is originally from Montreal and on a trip to Nova Scotia, he visited the IWK Health Centre and felt an immediate connection to the area and the work being done there. He has since made Halifax his home and has been working here for four years.
"I came to Nova Scotia for a visit and just fell in love with the people and the environment," says Dr. Chen. "I knew this was the place I wanted to build my career. Working with children has always been my passion, and pediatrics allows me to help children and their families through a critical part of their journey. There’s something special about being part of that process."
Dr. Chen recently completed his residency and is excited to begin this new chapter in Spryfield. "Seeing children grow and supporting their families through the challenges of illness is incredibly rewarding," he says.
As the new clinic continues to grow as well, both Dr. Chen and Dr. Treece are excited about the future. They’re dedicated to providing pediatric care, being a resource for families and continuing their personal and professional journeys in Spryfield.
"The best part is that it’s not just about treating illness - it’s about supporting a child's overall well-being and being there for them every step of the way,” Dr. Rockey says.
With a shared commitment for caring for children and supporting families, Dr. Rockey Chen and Dr. Michael Treece are making an impact on the Spryfield community and beyond.
