Nurses are everyday heroes for the patients they care for. In cancer care, patients can recognize the exemplary care provided by a nurse by nominating them for a Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

This year, two oncology nurses were recently presented with a Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses – one the result of a patient nomination, the other from the granddaughter of a patient.

Helen Munroe, an inpatient hematology nurse who works on 8A/B at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, was recently honoured with a Daisy Award for her ongoing commitment to patient care.

“During my stay on the 8th floor all the nurses were great, but Helen stands out,” said the patient who nominated Munroe. “Her untiring optimism, care and support in some of my weakest moments will be fondly remembered by myself and my wife… . She truly sees the humanity in her patients.”

Carmen Co-Dyre Adams, a registered nurse working in the medical oncology clinics at the QEII Cancer Centre, was also presented with a Daisy Award. “My 78-year-old grandmother, Roberta, got diagnosed in May 2023 with breast cancer. She was so scared,” said Roberta’s granddaughter who nominated Co-Dyre Adams. “Carmen was a light in the dark. She’s been a constant during this unknown and scary time. She has gone above and beyond to care for my nan not only physically but also emotionally/mentally. Thank you.”

Munroe and Co-Dyre Adams were two of 17 nurses nominated. Nominees included: Kelly Power, Melissa Norman, Rebecca Cummings, Heather Lynch, Kristie Pyke, Emily Eisenhauer, Victoria Gunn, Sarah Green, Sabrina Jeans, Kathleen Crosby, Emilie Comeau, Danielle Worth, Trish Brown, Shannon Greek and Lakeisha Seale.  All nominees will be acknowledged with pins and copies of their nominations. Nova Scotia Health congratulates all nominees.

The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Read more about the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses here.
