Transforming lives through Physical Activity Counselling: with Juliana Cardoso

Juliana Napoleao Cardoso, a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Kinesiologist, has a story that is as unique as it is inspiring. Her journey into kinesiology was not just a career choice, but a personal mission, ignited by her own experiences and a family that valued physical activity. Born and raised in Brazil, she was introduced to the importance of physical activity early on, a lesson that was reinforced during her own health challenges and nurtured by her mother's career in a related field. "I grew up learning about how important physical activity is," she reflects, "and experiencing its benefits firsthand during my own health challenges solidified my passion for this field."

Her pursuit of this passion brought her to Canada, where she earned a degree in Exercise and Wellness from Camosun College in Victoria, BC, in 2020. Her goal has always been clear: to enhance the quality of life for the general population and individuals with chronic conditions through tailored exercise programs. "I knew I wanted to help people live healthy, independent lives," Cardoso shares, reflecting on her career choices.

Her personal experience with Rheumatoid Arthritis uniquely equips her to empathize with participants navigating similar conditions. She explains, "I've experienced the benefits of physical activity firsthand, but I've also had to adapt my activity level according to my condition when needed." This condition, which she manages daily, has not only informed her professional approach but also serves as a testament to her resilience and empathy towards others facing similar struggles.

Currently based in Nova Scotia, Cardoso plays a pivotal role with the HealthyNS team, delivering Virtual Physical Activity Counselling (PAC) across the province. PAC, as Cardoso explains, is a service designed to empower Nova Scotians to increase their physical activity levels.  The program is unique because it’s free, accessible to anyone over 18 with a health card, and allows participants to self-refer. "It's about using evidence-based techniques to help individuals make lasting changes," she explains. "My role is to support them in setting and achieving their goals, providing guidance without imposing." She also supports her team with the delivery of educational group sessions and believes that the programs help people learn about prevention and management of conditions while empowering them to be active in the self-management of their health and wellness.

Cardoso finds immense fulfillment in seeing participants’ progress. "When someone tells me they now enjoy being active and look forward to their exercises, it's incredibly rewarding," she says. Her approach is deeply personal, focusing on each individual's needs and interests. "I create programs based on what the participant wants to do," Cardoso notes. "Safety, effectiveness, and sustainability are key considerations."

One of Cardoso’s most rewarding experiences is seeing patients do activities they couldn’t do before due to pain or lack of confidence. She recalls a participant who initially struggled with knee pain during walks. Through a personalized routine, they strengthened their legs and significantly increased their walking tolerance. "Seeing them regain mobility and confidence was truly gratifying," she shares.

Looking ahead, she hopes to see more people being aware of the service. "Breaking down barriers to physical activity is crucial," she emphasizes. "I hope to see more partnerships and community initiatives that promote active living." Her aspirations include further integrating recreation services and encouraging self-referral among individuals seeking to improve their health and well-being. Her commitment to improving others' lives through her work reflects her professional expertise and personal journey with chronic illness.

Cardoso demonstrates how personal experience can shape a meaningful career in healthcare, displaying resilience, empathy, and a profound commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of Nova Scotians through personalized physical activity support. Her story underscores the transformative power of passion and perseverance in overcoming challenges, inspiring change, and shaping a fulfilling career path in kinesiology.
