Nurses...in our own words: Christoper Fraser
To celebrate Nurses’ Week, we asked nurses to share their stories of motivation and aspiration and how they’d like to shape the future of nursing at Nova Scotia Health.
Health Services Manager, Christopher Fraser
QEII Halifax Infirmary, Unit 5.2 Med/Surg/Neuro/Trauma ICU
My name is Christopher Fraser and I’m the Health Services Manager for the QEII Halifax Infirmary Unit 5.2, which is Med/Surg/Neuro/Trauma ICU.
I chose a career in nursing after spending a week in the hospital. During my stay, I gained significant insight into what it meant to be a Registered Nurse and what they do. I've always been passionate about helping others and making a positive impact on people's lives. Nursing allows me to combine my love for science and caring for others into a fulfilling career where I can truly make a difference.
My path to my current role has been one of dedication, hard work, and continuous learning. I started with Nova Scotia Health as a housekeeper in 2004, followed by a Unit Clerk in 2006. In 2010, I graduated with a BScN from Dalhousie University and continued my career with NSH as a Registered Nurse. Over time, I progressed into leadership roles, taking on increasing responsibilities and challenges, ultimately leading me to the position of Health Services Manager.
What I like most about my department is the dedicated team of healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to provide exceptional care to our patients. I was drawn to this department because of its dynamic nature and the opportunity to make a significant impact on patient outcomes in critical care settings.
Throughout my career, several nurses/mentors have made a lasting impact on me. They taught me the importance of empathy, compassion, strong and consistent leadership, and effective communication in nursing. I also learned from them the significance of advocating for patients and empowering fellow nurses to excel in their roles.
I’d like to continue advancing in the field of nursing leadership, with a focus on improving patient care outcomes and enhancing the work environment for healthcare professionals. I pride myself on providing my team with the tools they need to care for their own health along with the health of their patients. My most recent project includes a wellness room for 5.2 ICU staff. This dedicated space fosters rejuvenation through activities like exercise, yoga, meditation, and noise reduction. Staff consistently express feeling revitalized, calm, and refreshed, effectively enhancing their resilience in managing the demanding environment of the ICU.
I aspire to make a lasting impact as a Registered Nurse by fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation in healthcare delivery. I want to ultimately contribute to the overall well-being of our patients and community.
