Dr. Dennis Brown’s residency journey in Nova Scotia
For Dr. Dennis Brown, choosing where to complete his medical residency was about more than training: it was about lifestyle, community and finding a place that felt like home.
Originally from Calgary, Dennis is now a family medicine resident in the Halifax/South Shore program, with Liverpool as his home base.
Dennis completed medical school at the University of Alberta, but his connection to Nova Scotia began earlier. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Dalhousie University and, after leaving the province, he found himself missing the ocean and the warmth of maritime hospitality.
The Halifax/South Shore residency program offered him the opportunity to train in a rural setting without giving up access to urban amenities. It also allowed him and his partner to embark on a new adventure out east together.
So far, Nova Scotia has delivered. “I am continuously surprised by the kindness of patients, staff and allied health team members who work to support us in our training and help us learn to provide the best care we can. I have also been impressed by the biking and outdoor opportunities along the South Shore. It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been,” Dennis says about the balance he’s experiencing between work and the lifestyle.
Residency in Nova Scotia has played a significant role in shaping the physician Dennis hopes to become. The slower pace of life has reinforced the importance of listening carefully to patients and meeting them where they are. “It’s okay to take some time and think things through,” he says.
What has stood out most during his training is the sheer variety of experiences packed into a single week. From home visits overlooking the ocean to treating patients in the emergency department, no two days are the same. “I’m able to wrap up the day with a sunset walk on the beach. I can’t think of anything much better than that,” Dennis reflects.
There hasn’t been just one defining moment that confirms he made the right choice to come to Nova Scotia; there have been many. “Frequently, my walks by the ocean after a long day, and having a supportive team around me, knowing I can reach out for support, has certainly solidified my choices.”
For medical residents considering a move to Nova Scotia, Dennis’ advice is simple: “If you’re looking for well-rounded training with the bonus of sunset walks on the beach, look no further.”
