Meet Joecy: Occupational therapist brings care to communities

For Joecy Peters, returning home to Nova Scotia to work in healthcare felt like the perfect fit. Born and raised in Masstown, Colchester County, she pursued her undergraduate degree in kinesiology at Ontario Tech University in Oshawa before earning her Master of Occupational Therapy at Western University, near Toronto, Ontario. In October 2024, she joined the Northern Zone Mobile Health and Wellness Team, eager to make a difference in communities across the region.

As an occupational therapist, Joecy helps people maintain - or regain - independence in their daily lives. Her work focuses on functional tasks and managing a patient’s daily routines. The job focuses on mobility improvement and home safety issues. Working with the mobile team allows her to provide care directly where it’s needed most, whether in community centres, homes, or clinics.

“One of the really cool things about being mobile is that we can go into different communities, listen to what’s needed and bring the healthcare professionals that can help fill those gaps,” Joecy explains.

She enjoys seeing first-hand impacts of her work. One memorable experience involved her working with a young adult who had sustained a spinal cord injury. “They felt like their life was over,” she says. “Helping them regain their independence by showing them they could still do things like drive (or) live on their own and just navigate daily life was incredibly rewarding.”

Joecy’s role is about meeting people where they are and adapting solutions to fit their unique needs. Whether it’s providing equipment to enhance mobility or offering strategies to improve memory and organization, she helps empower individuals to live their lives as fully as possible.
