Harnessing the Power of Movement: Jessica Eisener’s Approach to Health and Well-being

As a Kinesiologist, Jessica Eisener is driven by the belief that our bodies are designed for movement. “Our bodies are made to move. They need it, they crave it,” Eisener asserts. Not an athlete herself, she finds joy in challenging her limits and improving her performance. For Eisener, exercise transcends the boundaries of physical fitness, serving as a tool for stress management and a pathway to a healthier life.

Eisener’s journey into the world of kinesiology began with her own love for exercise. She holds a Kinesiology degree from Acadia University and has several fitness certifications. She spent a decade working with local YMCAs as a Fitness Program Director, where she trained in Pilates and became a YThrive Trainer and a YMCA Trainer of Trainers.

In her current role, Eisener provides Physical Activity Counseling, a service that helps individuals improve their health and manage chronic conditions through physical activity. “Physical activity is like another tool in our tool belt when it comes to managing our health,” Eisener explains. She works closely with her clients, understanding their medical history, social situation, and potential barriers to physical activity. She then helps them craft effective, enjoyable, personalized plans that suit their needs and goals. Her work isn't just about prescribing exercise; it is about fostering lasting lifestyle changes that enhance quality of life.

Eisener’s work is unique and contributes significantly to the overall health and well-being of Nova Scotians. She helps her clients take control of their bodies and their health. By increasing activity and reducing sitting time, her clients can prevent or delay the onset of many diseases, reduce the need for medications, and improve their quality of life.

A typical day for Eisener involves one-on-one consultations with clients, group education sessions, and collaborations with colleagues and community leaders. She works out of several health centers across the Western Zone, offering her expertise to a wide range of clients.

Reflecting on her impact, Jessica finds fulfillment in the individual successes she witnesses daily. “Changing habits can be difficult…Physical Activity Counseling encourages clients to focus on what they can do given their current situation,” she says. She loves seeing the positive changes in her clients as they achieve their small goals and grow in their activity and confidence. One such success story involves a client who, through Jessica's guidance, overcame sedentary habits and regained strength and mobility. These moments underscore Jessica's belief that small, consistent changes can lead to profound improvements in health and well-being.

Looking ahead, Jessica is enthusiastic about advancing her career and expanding her role as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist. Currently pursuing her Clinical Exercise Physiologist designation, she is committed to continuous learning and innovation in her field. Jessica envisions further enhancing her ability to serve the community, advocating for the integration of physical activity as a cornerstone of health promotion in Nova Scotia.
