Finding balance in healthcare can be challenging, but for Dr. Phil Thomas, it was a guiding principle that shaped both his career and his journey to practice medicine in Nova Scotia.
With more than 15 years of experience in Birmingham, UK, the seasoned geriatrician understands firsthand the challenges of managing the intensity of clinical work alongside personal well-being. Dr. Thomas completed his medical degree and an integrated degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Birmingham. After his postgraduate training in the West Midlands, he spent his time working as a geriatric physician before becoming clinical lead for Geriatric Medicine at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust in 2020. There, he led a department of 16 specialists before relocating to Sydney, Nova Scotia, in July 2024.
Dr. Thomas’s decision to move to Nova Scotia stemmed from his desire for a fresh start and better work-life balance, while continuing to provide high-quality, patient-centered care. A family holiday, where he fully disconnected from work, made him realize how important change was. He was also inspired by a friend who had moved to Canada and found renewed happiness. “That was a real stimulus for me.”
The welcoming people of Nova Scotia, along with the chance to work with renowned specialists, sealed his decision. “I get huge amounts of enjoyment and reward from my clinical work, whilst having time to enjoy all the province has to offer with my family.”
Dr. Thomas was drawn to geriatrics by its unique challenges and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of older adults, who he says, “are among the most vulnerable groups we look after in the hospital.” His focus is to ensure dignity and quality of life throughout every stage of aging. His perspective was shaped by his early experiences working in a large intensive care unit, reinforcing his desire to help people age well.
In his new role, he continues his passion for working with older adults, appreciating the opportunity to have conversations with the person he is caring for and their loved ones, agree on treatment priorities, and focus on what matters most to them. The complexity of geriatric care is an exciting challenge for him—managing conditions and medications, considering their interactions and overall impact on health—feels like solving a puzzle. “It’s about finding what fits, finding the right balance, and adjusting things as needed to maintain the best quality of life possible,” he shared.
Looking forward to the future, Dr. Thomas is excited about the opportunities in Cape Breton. “It’s an exciting time to be here. The new medical campus at Cape Breton University opens this year and the new hospitals are being built. The Geriatric clinic team has done a brilliant job improving the clinic wait times,” he said. Despite the progress that has been made, he emphasized that there are still lots of opportunities to expand services to support older adults in the hospital.
Dr. Thomas remains deeply committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care, ensuring that his dedication to his profession is as strong as ever, even as he adapts to his new life in in Nova Scotia.
He encourages other healthcare professionals to consider Nova Scotia for its unique opportunities and supportive environment. “I’d suggest coming and having a conversation with the recruitment team,” he said. “There are huge opportunities here and they want you to do well. They want you to thrive.”
One of the aspects of life in Nova Scotia that stands out most to Dr. Thomas is the warmth and friendliness of the community. “I’ve noticed that people here are genuinely friendly and interested in you. When someone asks, ‘How are you?’ that's a genuine question.”
While acknowledging that every healthcare system has its challenges, he stressed that Nova Scotia is a place where one can make an impact. “Nova Scotia may not have all the services it needs already in place, but that’s part of what makes it exciting. Yes, there are challenges, but show me a healthcare system that doesn't have challenges. If you’re passionate about service development and improvement, this is a place to create change.”
With its friendly people, beautiful landscapes and the potential for a great work-life balance, Nova Scotia offers both professional and personal fulfillment—a lifestyle Dr. Thomas is eager to embrace. “The opportunities for outdoor living here are huge,” he said, looking forward to beaches, skiing, and exploring the province’s natural beauty. With his winter tires already put to good use (and perhaps a few extra layers than he is used to), Dr. Thomas and his family are excited to continue exploring all that Nova Scotia has to offer.
