World Pharmacist Day is Sept. 25, an ideal time to highlight the vital role that pharmacy teams play in healthcare. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are not only critical thinkers and problem-solvers, but also steadfast advocates for their patients. By working alongside doctors, nurses, social workers and other healthcare professionals, pharmacy teams ensure that patients have access to the medications and treatments they need most.

Christopher McKenna is a clinical pharmacist at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro, Nova Scotia. Inspired by the opportunity to use his knowledge and education in a dynamic clinical setting, McKenna chose to pursue a career as a hospital pharmacist, allowing him to leverage his education and meet his passion for collaboration. “Being in a hospital setting means I can communicate directly with an interdisciplinary team and other pharmacy colleagues every day,” said McKenna. This constant interaction not only enhances his learning but also leads to improved patient outcomes. His commitment to patient care and interdisciplinary collaboration exemplifies the essence of pharmacy practice, especially in a rural setting.

Reflecting on his experience, McKenna noted the unique benefits of working in a rural area. “The relationships I’ve built with my colleagues and allied healthcare members are invaluable. We’re all striving for a common goal, and the knowledge I provide is both respected and appreciated by the entire team.” This sense of mutual respect and shared purpose fosters a supportive environment, enhancing both professional growth and patient care.

“In a rural healthcare context, where resources can be limited, every member of the healthcare team plays a crucial role,” he added.

For those considering a career in pharmacy, McKenna’s journey serves as an inspiring testament to the rewards of this vital profession. Hospital pharmacy offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful work while continually learning and growing alongside a diverse team of healthcare professionals. If you’re passionate about patient care and eager to make a difference, a position in hospital pharmacy might be the perfect fit for you.
