VirtualCareNS provides Nova Scotians access to a Nova Scotian primary-care provider (doctor or nurse practitioner) online through their computer or mobile device. 

You will have access to the Full Care and Basic Care options. During our open hours, please use the Full Care option offered by Nova Scotia providers. Outside of these hours you can use the Basic Care stream for healthcare advice and basic concerns. Please note that the providers on the Basic Care stream are not able to provide requisitions and referrals. 

Full care hours of operation as follows:
Monday: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (AST) 
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (AST) 
Wednesday: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (AST) 
Sunday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (AST)

How do I access this service?

• Have a valid Nova Scotia Healthcare Card number. If you are new to the province, you cannot use VirtualCareNS until you have received your physical healthcare card. 
• Be able to access the internet through a computer or mobile device
• Have an e-mail address
• Be located within the province when accessing VirtualCareNS

To sign up for VirtualCareNS:

• Enter your Nova Scotia health card number.
• Create your account by follow the prompts on the screen.
• Add your health history. There is helpful information on this video about adding your health history.  
• Once registered, you can now request a visit with a primary care provider.

Please note:

• If you do not have a primary care provider and are not on the Need a Family Practice Registry, you can register online or by calling 811.
• If you are having trouble converting your account, please contact Maple: https://www.getmaple.ca/contact-us/
• If you are an adult who has a child or children under the age of 16, you can add them to your VirtualCareNS profile (watch this how-to video). This enables you to keep your family’s medical records in one location.

In addition to VirtualCare NS, there is a range of other health care options.           

How do I request a visit?

• To log into the VirtualCareNS platform, either use the Maple app or visit the Maple sign in page
• Select the Get Care button.
• Confirm your location.
• Describe your symptoms. You can select from a list, or write in more detail.
• Select Continue to Pairing, which will put you in line for the next available primary care provider.
• The family doctor or nurse practitioner will send you a message letting you know they are ready to see you.
• The family doctor or nurse practitioner will begin the visit. It will be very similar to an in-person visit.
• If you have requested a visit for a child or someone who is in your care, please make sure that they are with you for the visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are virtual care appointments first come, first serve? Will I be triaged before being provided an appointment?              
These appointments are first come, first serve. You can fill out a form that collects your visit details, symptoms, and information, and then they are directly connected with a primary care provider 

Is there a phone option for virtual care?              
The service is only available through the mobile or web app. The visit is using the devices video or audio through the app, or a provider can call a patient once the visit is initiated.

What kind of conditions can be treated virtually?              
Having an online visit through VirtualCare is similar to an in-person medical appointment. The family doctors and nurse practitioners provide care and health advice for many common health needs. They can diagnose, prescribe medications and treat common symptoms.  

However, there are certain consults that cannot be completed virtually. Those that will need physical exam, symptoms like ear infection that will need to be inspected and others. Your provider will be able to assess if you need to be in person versus virtually 

Can these providers order tests? Prescribe?              
With VirtualCare, Nova Scotia providers for patients without a primary care provider can order labs, and issue prescriptions and diagnostic imaging tests.
