Please plan for extra travel time when coming to the QEII Halifax Infirmary. As of February 18, the easternmost, northbound lane of Robie Street will be closed for the duration of the Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project, leaving two lanes open. Expect potential delays and consider alternative routes when possible.

The Nova Scotia Peer Support Phone Service is a non-crisis, toll-free support line available to Nova Scotians aged 18 and older. Staffed by trained peer supporters with lived experience of mental health or substance use challenges, this service provides emotional and social support during difficult times.

Who Can Call?

This service is for anyone who feels:

  • Alone, anxious, or overwhelmed
  • In need of someone to talk to about life’s challenges, such as:
    • A tough day at work
    • A difficult relationship
    • Supporting a loved one
    • Or other personal struggles

What to Expect When You Call

  • You will speak with a trained peer supporter who understands and can relate to your experience.
  • Peer supporters will listen, validate your feelings, and help you feel heard.
  • Your conversation is confidential unless there is a risk of harm to you or someone else.
  • Calls are not recorded, and you can remain anonymous. 

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if no one answers? 

If no one is immediately available, you may leave a voicemail with your name and phone number. A peer supporter may call you back if time allows. Otherwise, you are encouraged to try again during the next service shift.

What if I get disconnected? 

If you are disconnected, you can call back anytime during operating hours. 

Service Guidelines

To ensure a positive and respectful experience:

  1. Respect Others: Refrain from using abusive or discriminatory language.
  2. Service Boundaries: Peer supporters provide emotional and social support but do not offer clinical advice, references, or follow-up services.
  3. Confidentiality: Your privacy is protected, except in cases of imminent risk of harm or suspected abuse.
