Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Maternal and Child
Neonatal services refers to the care of newborns that require observation and care immediately following birth. The care provided in neonatal services is specialized with a health care team made up of a neonatologist, pediatrician or family physician and maternal/child nurses.

If your newborn require neonatal services they will be cared for by the team in the Neonatal Nursery which is often near by the maternity ward so Moms can visit their babies regularly.

Newborns are transferred to their mothers' room for the remainder of their stay once their condition has improved. Newborns who continue to need observation and medical intervention may need to be transported to the tertiary care nursery at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax.
