One Week Left to Register for Cape Breton Cancer Transitions Program
There’s only a week left to register for a free program for cancer survivors who finished treatment and are adjusting to life after cancer care.
Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment is a seven-week support program for people who have completed cancer treatment. It is offered free of charge through funding support from the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
Cancer Transitions starts on Tuesday, Apr. 18 and runs consecutive Tuesdays from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Sydney YMCA. All sessions begin with 30 minutes of exercise customized to each participant’s fitness level. Each week, a different topic is covered. Topics include: taking control of your survivorship, exercise for wellness, emotional health and well-being, nutrition beyond cancer, medical management beyond cancer and moving beyond cancer.
“Cancer Transitions targets many of the physical, psychological and practical issues that cancer survivors face when cancer treatment ends,” says Tom MacNeil, medical social worker with the Cancer Centre. “The program is about being and acting empowered. People who have participated in Cancer Transitions have experienced less worry about the negative impacts of cancer, better physical functioning, more commitment to physical activity and improvements in fat-related dietary habits.”
Cancer Transitions is free but registration is required. People will also need a signed waiver from a physician to take part in the exercise portion of the program. For further information or to register, call Dawn Carey at 902-567-8074.
