Simulation training reaches rural facilities in Northern Zone

Simulation training has reached new areas, including All Saints Springhill Hospital, where Amy McMasters, Clinical Nurse Educator, and Susan MacDonald, Charge Nurse, lead a new approach to staff development.

“The collaboration has been incredible,” shared Amy McMasters. “It’s about bringing our team together for effective learning experiences right here in our facility.”

The mobile simulation van delivers education directly to rural areas like Springhill. In recent sessions, various units at All Saints Springhill Hospital underwent tailored resuscitation exercises, marking the first mobile simulation session delivered through this new model in the Northern Zone. The Interprofessional Practice and Learning (IPPL) team has now also delivered similar sessions at Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital and North Cumberland Health Care Centre, with further sessions scheduled for all rural sites in the zone on a rotational schedule.

“Our aim is simple: to provide equal opportunities for all our staff, regardless of location,” emphasized Derek LeBlanc, Simulation Program Manager for the Northern Zone. “These sessions are about more than just skill-building; they uncover systemic challenges unique to rural healthcare.”

“It’s vital for us to address the challenges specific to our environment,” said LeBlanc. “This includes ensuring easy access to essential equipment in the facility. If you haven’t used a piece of equipment in a while, it’s important to know where it is located in the facility.”

The staff response has been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting a hunger for skill refinement and readiness to handle challenges, including infrequent high-acuity situations like resuscitation.
“These sessions not only enhance skills but also build confidence and morale,” added Susan MacDonald. “It’s reassuring to see our team fully engaged, ready to tackle any challenge.”
As Nova Scotia Health continues to refine and expand its simulation programs, the focus remains on empowering staff and enhancing patient care across the province.
