Job shadowing is an opportunity to observe and follow an employee through their daily work routine. Job shadowing is completely hands- off, involves observation only and depending on the position this is for the shadowing can be 1-3 days. During job shadowing, a participant will gain insight of the everyday duties and job functions of the department or unit within Nova Scotia Health.

How does job shadowing differ from the student/learner 
placement?

Job shadowing is completely hands-off, involves observation only and can last for one to three days if applicable to the opportunity. The main purpose of a job shadowing is to explore career opportunities within a department or unit at Nova Scotia Health.

A Student/Learner Placement can be a paid or unpaid, clinical, or non- clinical placement for post-secondary students (except medical students) in facilities throughout Nova Scotia Health. These placements typically last for many weeks at a time and give post- secondary students hands-on experience in their field of study. 

Who can job shadow?

Generally, those who fall into the following two categories are 
considered eligible:

  • You are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in an academic program that requires the completion of job shadow experience; 
    or
  • You are looking at exploring job opportunities.

What are the requirements prior to participating in a job 
shadowing experience?

The requirements for applicant are as follows:

Applications are to be completed online. The online form will be sent to the Human Resources team based on the Zone provided on the form.

Can I job shadow any person or area within Nova Scotia Health 
Authority?

Requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Depending on operational requirements, requests may or may not be accepted.Applications should indicate the rationale behind the request for the specific area.
