The Halifax Infirmary is home to the Charles V. Keating Emergency and Trauma Centre. It also houses a number of inpatient units, general surgery, vascular surgery, cardiovascular surgery, orthopedic surgery and outpatient clinics. Registration for outpatient clinics is located at the Summer St. lobby.
The main entrance to the Halifax Infirmary is at 1796 Summer St., across from the Summer St. parkade. Patients and visitors no longer have access to the Halifax Infirmary via the Robie St. entrance. New signage and volunteer resources is in place to support wayfinding.

Visitors are welcome throughout the day, except during a rest period between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Parking
Parking at the Halifax Infirmary for patients and visitors is at the Summer Street. parkade located at 1797 Summer St.
The Emergency Department (ED) will not change, but a new, temporary driveway for the drop-off and ED parking is shifting slightly north on Robie St. Overflow parking will now be at the Summer St. parkade:
You can pay the parking fee at the machines inside the hospital before you leave or within the parkade. The machine accepts cash or a credit card. The following fees apply:
- $3 per hour for the first two hours
- $2.50 for the third hour
- $2 for each additional hour
- There is a maximum daily rate for $14.50
There is also a parking lot with meters further south from the entrance on Summer St.
There is bike parking at all entrances.
Emergency department curbside parking service
To help make parking easier and more readily available for patients and visitors of the Halifax Infirmary emergency department (ED), a curbside parking service is available at no cost when the ED surface lot is full. This service is provided in partnership with Indigo and is designed to support patients and visitors who require access to the Halifax Infirmary emergency department.
How It Works:
- Hours of Operation: Every day from 7:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.
- Arrival: An Indigo parking attendant will greet you at the ED entrance, provide a claim stub, and park your vehicle at the Summer Street parkade.
- Departure:
- Before 11:45 p.m.: Call the number provided on your claim stub, and the valet will return your car to the ED entrance.
- After 11:45 p.m.: Vehicles will be returned to the ED lot. Keys will be securely stored in a locked safe at the ED entrance. You’ll be contacted with a digital code to access your keys with information on how to access.
For more information, please speak to an Indigo parking attendant on-site located at the blue ‘Valet’ booth in front of the ED entrance doors. This service is free for all ED patients and visitors.
Free Shuttle Service
Patients who need transportation between the HI and VG sites can take the patient and staff shuttle, which runs between sites every 20 minutes during the day.
Shuttle pick-up and drop-off areas are located at the:

- Outside Halifax Infirmary Building

Leaves every 20 minutes starting at 6:15 a.m. and ending at 4:10 p.m.
- VG site
- Outside MacKenzie Building

Leaves every 20 minutes starting at 6:22 a.m. and ending at 4:20 p.m.

TV and Phone in your room
During your stay in hospital, you have the option of activating your bedside phone service.
TV Service
Bedside TV service is available at no charge if you request, receive and pay for a private or semi-private room either personally or by using your private health insurance. If you do not have private health insurance, the following rates apply:
- Premium TV: $12.45 per day plus taxes
Please note: A portion of the revenues generated is returned to the hospital to help fund various hospital improvements.
How to set up bedside TV service
- To activate your television, just dial 2999 from your bedside telephone.
- A customer service representative is available every day between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. to address any questions or concerns, receive cash payment and process your request.
Phone Service
How to connect, transfer or disconnect your phone
- Dial 499 from your bedside phone and a BellAliant representative will arrange to have your telephone service connected, transferred to another bed, or disconnected.
- BellAliant’s office is open seven days a week (except holidays), 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
- If you have questions about the service, please call 1-800-760-8969 .
- When you are discharged remember to dial 499 to request that your phone be disconnected so that billing is stopped.
- If you forget to request your hospital phone disconnected before discharged to home, call 1-800-760-8969 Monday to Sunday between 8:15 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. including holidays to arrange disconnection.
Service & Connection Rates
- There is a $10 connection charge to set up in-hospital phone service.
- The following fees also apply:
- $3.99 for the first 30 days
- $2.00 for each day after 30 days
Billing
- Daily service and connection charges are billed to your BellAliant home telephone account.
- If you are with another provider, BellAliant will create a separate account for the duration of your hospital stay.
- Your bill can be paid the same way you would pay any other BellAliant bill.
Inpatient Meals
During your stay at the hospital, you will receive breakfast, lunch and supper daily. You can choose from a variety of options each day. The menus typically include:
- Breakfast: An assortment of homemade muffins, hot and cold cereals, yogurt and fruit, coffee or tea.
- Lunch: Choose from soup and sandwiches, mixed vegetables, pasta and casseroles, including dessert of fresh fruit or a sweet.
- Supper: Options include meat, fish, potatoes and vegetables.
If you follow a special diet or have food-related allergies or sensitivities, let us know when you arrive.
The procedure for ordering meals will be further discussed on admission by dietetic technicians. If you need help filling out your menu, or feel you or your family member may be unable fill out the menus daily, please talk to the dietetic technicians.
